Yahoo Groups will be completely closed and removed from the Internet on December 15, 2020.
Yahoo Groups is completing its final phase of closure on December 15, 2020, after which it will be completely removed from the Internet.
Last year began the process of shutting down Yahoo Groups, a once-thriving website with vibrant communities.
Beginning December 15, 2020 the Yahoo Groups website will shut down and members will no longer be able to send or receive emails from Yahoo Groups. Note: This change does not involve Yahoo Mail, as this is a different product. Your Yahoo email account will not be impacted.— Yahoo Customer Care (@YahooCare) October 14, 2020
First, Yahoo turned off the ability to use groups in October 2019. New content could no longer be added to groups, but existing content could still be viewed and downloaded.
Content in Yahoo Groups was no longer available for viewing in December 2019 and users had to upload their data before January 2020.
Until now, a stripped-down version of Yahoo Groups existed on the internet. Its only option is to allow group members to send private messages to each other.
Soon, the last remaining Yahoo Groups feature will be removed and the website itself will become unavailable. The Yahoo Groups shutdown announcement now appears on the groups.yahoo.com home page.
Announcement for Closing of Yahoo Groups
The announcement reads:
“We’re shutting down the Yahoo Groups website on December 15, 2020 and members will no longer be able to send or receive emails from Yahoo Groups.Yahoo Mail features will continue to function as expected and there will be no changes to your Yahoo Mail account, emails, photos or other inbox content. There will also be no changes to other Yahoo properties or services. You can find more information about the Yahoo Groups shutdown and alternative service options on this help page.
Yahoo cites a reduction in the use of Yahoo Groups as a reason for closing:
“Yahoo Groups has seen a steady decline in usage over the last several years. Over that same period, we’ve witnessed unprecedented levels of engagement across our properties as customers seek out premium, trustworthy content. While these decisions are never easy, we must sometimes make difficult decisions regarding products that no longer fit our long-term strategy as we hone our focus on other areas of the business.”
Yahoo Mail will continue to function and messages will no longer be sent or received from members of the Yahoo Group after December 15th.
If you are looking for an alternative to Yahoo Group, the company recommends the following: Nextdoor. There is even a help page on moving Yahoo Group to Nextdoor Group.
