According to sources, teams at Meta are considering integrating advertisements in WhatsApp as Facebook’s parent company attempts to monetize the most widely used messaging app on the planet.

The topic of these discussions has been the display of advertisements in contact list chats on the WhatsApp chat screen.

Company CEO disputes

WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart wrote on Friday, “This @FT article is untrue. We don’t carry out this.

Along the same lines, WhatsApp stated, “We can’t keep track of every discussion someone had within our organization, but we aren’t testing this, working on it, and it’s not at all our plan.”

Ad-free subscription service?

High-level internal arguments have been sparked by the issue, with the main worry being that the move will alienate people.

According to two sources, Meta is considering charging a monthly fee to use the app without advertisements, although many insiders are opposed to the idea.

Before Facebook paid $19 billion to acquire WhatsApp in 2014, its co-founder Brian Acton made the “No advertisements! Don’t play! A company motto is “No gimmicks!”

Although the corporation has claimed that it is departing from this ideology, it now looks that doing so would be perfect for it to capitalize on the platform and monetize it.

Justifying it or coming up with a workaround that would not aggravate its clients is challenging.

Is this the best decision?

Ed East, CEO of the advertising firm Billion Dollar Boy, asserted that there are many opportunities for advertising on WhatsApp.

He claimed that while it would be a “appealing prospect” for advertisers, users might find it “invasive.”

Does it worth it?

Senior executives are worried that switching to pro-ad might ruin the WhatsApp experience and drive users away, which is a valid fear.

This would be a much greater loss than any potential cash it might get from monetizing yet another free product, comparable to what Elon Musk accomplished with his acquisition of Twitter (now X).
