BGMI Surpasses 100 Mn Registered Users In India

BGMI 100 Mn Registered Users

The popular esports game Battlegrounds Mobile India BGMI has reportedly amassed 100 million registered users in the country.

Game developer Krafton operates BGMI and it is one of the most popular games in their portfolio. BGMI is the Indian version of the popular PUBG Mobile game and is exclusively designed for India.

Media reports had previously noted that the South Korean game developer was planning to invest $100Mn in Indian startups this year.

In February of this year, Krafton acquired a minority stake in Nautilus mobile, owned by JetSynthesys, for $5.4 million.

BGMI is a Multiplayer Online Battle Royale game developed and published by Krafton. The game was released in July of last year for Android devices and in August for iOS devices.

Beneficiary Of Crackdown On Chinese Apps

In September 2020, the Indian government announced a crackdown on Chinese apps. It banned 117 apps, including the popular PUBG Mobile, over data security issues.

After the ban, Krafton revoked its ties with Tencent in India and announced that it would launch an India-only version of the popular esports game. Months later, it introduced the game in the form of Battlegrounds Mobile India.

Previously, the South Korean game developer held the IP rights to the game, while Tencent Games was the distribution partner for PUBG Mobile in India.

According to Statista, the Indian esports industry generated revenue close to INR 2.5 billion in 2021. The same figure is projected to rise to INR 11 billion by 2025.
